Police continue search for robbery suspect in Iron River

IRON RIVER -- The man suspected of robbing the Superior Iron Range Community Federal Credit Union in Iron River is still at large.

Very little information has come out about the robbery as police continue to follow-up on leads.

One piece of new information we did receive is everyone at the credit union followed the proper protocol during the robbery.

Things appeared to be mostly back to normal in Iron River Wednesday. The credit union opened its drive-thru, but the lobby remained closed.

Police are looking for the man who robbed the credit union Tuesday. He is described as five feet nine inches tall with a medium build.

Police say no one outside of the credit union got a good look at the suspect.

"School was in session, it was mid-morning, and there wasn't a lot of business activity," said Michigan State Police Lieutenant Chris Sholander. "So there weren't many people close by where this event occurred that could have been able to identify him."

Sholander said police are continuing to investigate leads in the area.

Iron County residents are still shocked that a bank robbery happened in their backyard.

"I don't see that kind of crookedness or even vandalism or too much of that kind of stuff going on. So yeah, I'm surprised," said Crystal Falls resident and frequent Iron River visitor Randy Dion.

"Well, I guess the chance is always there that it would happen, but I guess I thought people were smarter here," said Iron River resident Ralph Dabeck.

Police say they are continuing to follow leads and are working diligently to catch their suspect.

"I'm optimistic that sooner or later this will be resolved, but I don't know if it will be in the next 24 hours," Sholander said.

Upper Michigan's Source contacted the credit union where the robbery took place, but they declined to comment on the incident.

Update:

More than 24 hours after the robbery at the Superior Iron Range Community Federal Credit Union in Iron River, police are continuing to look for their suspect.

Police have been following up on leads in Iron County, but so far no major leads have developed according to Michigan State Police Lieutenant Chris Sholander.

The FBI is leading the investigation with help from the Iron River Police, Michigan State Police, Iron County Sheriff's Department, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The suspect is described by police as a white male, approximately five feet nine inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a dark helmet and a mask along with green coveralls at the time of the robbery.

He escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash on a green ATV four-wheeler.

Sholander said credit union employees followed proper protocol during the robbery. The credit union declined to comment on the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI in Marquette at (906) 226-2058 or the Iron River Police Department at (906) 265-4321.

Reward offered in robbery suspect capture and conviction

IRON RIVER -- Three days after the armed robbery at the Superior Iron Range Community Federal Credit Union in Iron River, police still don't have a suspect in custody.

Police say the robber is so hard to track down because he blended in with the recreational area. He drove off on a four-wheeler in coveralls. There are plenty of others who fit that description in the area.

Police also say few people saw the robber flee the scene.

"The complexity of the case is that we're limited with our actual witnesses," explains Lt. Chris Sholander of the Michigan State Police. "There was nobody that observed the suspect either arriving or departing, and the only witnesses we have were the victims that were inside the bank. So what we're doing now is chasing down investigative leads that have been called in by community citizens."

Police are asking for your help to find the suspect. He's described as a white male, approximately five foot nine inches tall with a medium build. He was last seen in a black helmet and mask, along with green coveralls.

The credit union is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect. If you have that information, you are asked to call the FBI in Marquette at (906) 226-2058.

The State Police say they need the public's help if they're going to arrest a suspect in Tuesday's robbery of the credit union in Iron River.

The problem, authorities say, is that few people were on the streets when the crime was committed, and the robber, driving an ATV, just blended in with everybody else in this rural recreation area.

He's described as 5'9" with a medium build.

So far, it appears that only the people in the credit union actually saw the robber, although authorities say that in a small community like this, they expect someone to eventually come forward.
