Mary Powell of Flint, Michigan
found this map turtle shell
near Fishook Lake
in Alger County, Michigan, during
a Sept '02 CUPG Sierra Club backpacking trip
along the Fox River Pathway.
After some post-trip research, Mary says
that "judging by its size, the original owner was an
adult female--males being somewhat smaller. The species name
comes from the markings on the shell, which resemble contour
lines on a topo map. Interestingly, map turtles are not supposed
to live in the Upper Peninsula. Range maps in field guides
show the northern boundary of their habitat extends about
halfway up the Lower Peninsula. Map turtles prefer large bodies
of water with heavily vegetated bottoms--a good description
of Fishook Lake--where they eat snails, crayfish, and aquatic
insects."

God's wilderness lies the hope of the world,
the
